Swamp Rose Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos)
Also known as: Hardy Hibiscus, Crimson-eyed Rose Mallow
Swamp Rose Mallow is a show-stopping native perennial known for its gigantic, hibiscus-like blooms that light up wet meadows, streambanks, and rain gardens. Native to the eastern and southeastern U.S., this adaptable wetland plant produces plate-sized flowers in shades of pink, rose, or white with crimson centers from midsummer into fall. It thrives in moist soils and supports a wide array of pollinators, making it a centerpiece plant for ecological landscaping and native garden designs.
Key Characteristics
-
Massive Blooms for Pollinators & Garden Drama
Blooming from July through September, Swamp Rose Mallow dazzles with 6–10" wide flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Bumblebees are especially frequent visitors, crawling deep into the blooms for pollen and nectar. The long bloom period ensures extended pollinator support during high summer. -
Adapted to Wet Soils & Rain Gardens
This species thrives in medium to wet soils, including areas with periodic flooding or poor drainage. It is perfect for rain gardens, wet meadows, streambanks, swales, and pond edges, where its vigorous growth helps stabilize soil and beautify problem areas. -
Host Plant & Habitat Builder
Swamp Rose Mallow is a larval host plant for several moths, including the Io moth (Automeris io), and supports beneficial insects with its lush foliage and sturdy stems. Its seeds also feed birds and small mammals in winter if left standing. -
Native Structure for Tall Plantings & Meadow Design
Reaching heights of 4–7 feet, it adds vertical drama to native gardens, wetland buffers, and pollinator meadows. Its large leaves and sturdy stalks contribute to layered habitat, ideal for integrating into permaculture systems, food forests, and riparian restorations.
