Iron & Clay cowpeas are a heat-loving, quick-growing summer cover crop prized for their ability to fix nitrogen, smother weeds, and produce abundant biomass. These vigorous legumes thrive in poor soils and hot, dry conditions, making them ideal for summer soil building in gardens and fields alike.
Their dense foliage shades out weeds while their roots feed soil biology. Mow or terminate before seed set to return nutrients to the soil and prepare for fall planting.
Best use: Summer nitrogen fixing, weed suppression, soil improvement
Sow: After last frost through midsummer
Growth window: 6–10 weeks before flowering
Seeding rate: ~1 lb per 500 sq ft
