Big-leaved Aster (Eurybia macrophylla)
Also known as: Large-leaved Aster, Aster macrophyllus (former name)*
Big-leaved Aster is a hardy, shade-tolerant native perennial with bold foliage and soft violet blooms that light up the understory in late summer. One of the few asters adapted to forest conditions, it spreads by rhizomes to form lush groundcover in dappled or full shade, making it a valuable native alternative to invasive groundcovers. Its flowers provide vital late-season nectar for pollinators, while its large leaves help suppress weeds and stabilize forest soils.
Key Characteristics
-
Late-Season Nectar in Shaded Habitats
Blooming from August to October, Big-leaved Aster provides essential nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and late-flying insects at a time when few other shade plants are flowering. It is particularly important for native solitary bees preparing for winter. -
Host Plant and Insect Habitat
This species supports a variety of native insect life, including serving as a larval host plant for Pearl Crescent butterflies (Phyciodes tharos). Its dense, broad foliage also provides shelter for ground-dwelling insects and overwintering beneficials. -
Excellent Groundcover for Woodlands and Slopes
Big-leaved Aster spreads slowly by rhizomes, forming attractive colonies of large, heart-shaped basal leaves. This makes it ideal for naturalizing in shade gardens, woodland edges, and sloped understory plantings where erosion control and weed suppression are needed. -
Integrates Easily into Permaculture and Native Landscapes
As a herbaceous understory species, Big-leaved Aster fits seamlessly into native plantings, food forests, and forest-edge guilds. It pairs well with spring ephemerals and summer woodland species, extending the flowering season into fall.
