Smooth Blue Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve)
Also known as: Glaucous Michaelmas Daisy*
Smooth Blue Aster is a stunning native perennial with smooth, blue-green foliage and masses of violet-blue flowers that bloom profusely in late summer and fall. This clump-forming aster brings vivid color and critical pollinator support to prairies, meadows, and garden borders. Its sturdy, upright habit and tolerance for dry soils make it an excellent choice for restoration projects, native plantings, and layered ecological gardens.
Key Characteristics
-
Vital Late-Season Pollinator Support
Blooming from August through October, Smooth Blue Aster provides abundant nectar and pollen during a time when resources are scarce. It's especially attractive to Monarch butterflies, bumblebees, honeybees, and metallic green sweat bees, helping sustain pollinators before winter. -
Host Plant for Butterfly Larvae
Like many native asters, Symphyotrichum laeve is a larval host plant for the Pearl Crescent butterfly (Phyciodes tharos) and supports a wide range of moth and butterfly caterpillars. Its foliage also shelters beneficial insects and overwintering pollinators. -
Adapted to Dry, Sunny Sites
This aster thrives in dry to medium soils and full sun, making it well suited to prairies, dry meadows, and xeriscape gardens. Its blue-green leaves and waxy stems help it retain moisture, and it performs well in challenging, poor soils once established. -
Excellent for Permaculture and Meadow Design
Use Smooth Blue Aster in permaculture pollinator strips, meadow restorations, or succession plantings to extend the bloom season. It combines beautifully with goldenrods, grasses, and fall-flowering natives to provide color, texture, and ecological function.
