Red Mulberry (Morus rubra)
The Red Mulberry (Morus rubra) is a popular variety of mulberry tree, known for its delicious, sweet, and juicy fruit. Native understory tree that naturally occurs along streams and riverbanks and in woods. Large spreading crown 25-60 feet tall and 35-40 feet wide. Juicy cylindrical shaped edible fruits are prized source for jams, jellies, pies, drinks, or just eating fresh! The fruit is medium to large, about 1-2 inches long, and is dark red when ripe. The flesh is sweet and juicy, with a flavor similar to blackberry. New growth leaves are also edible. Red mulberries are a good source of vitamins and minerals, and they are also a popular food source for wildlife. Humans have extensively used Red Mulberry wood in fencing, furniture and tools. An amazing native fruit tree!
