The Swamp Chestnut Oak (Quercus michauxii), also called Cow Oak and Basket Oak, is a large, deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States. It is a fast-growing, well-formed tree, which grows in well-drained soils. It is also able to withstand flooding for short periods during the dormant season. The Swamp Chestnut Oak is an important timber tree, producing a strong, durable wood that is used for a variety of purposes, including furniture, flooring, and construction. The large acorns of the Swamp Chestnut Oak (second only in size to Bur Oaks) are an important food source for wildlife, and the tree itself provides habitat for a variety of birds and mammals. The Swamp Chestnut Oak is also a medicinal plant, with bark that has been used to treat a variety of ailments.
