Pecan (Carya illinoinensis)
The Pecan tree (Carya illinoensis) is a large, deciduous tree that is native to the southern United States and Mexico. This showy shade tree is valuable for nut production and valuable wood. Typically it is used for reforestation, wetland restoration, food forests, and silvopasture systems! The Pecan tree is prized for its delicious nuts, which are used in a variety of dishes, including pies, cakes, and candy. Pecan trees are also an important source of food for wildlife, such as squirrels and deer. In addition to their culinary and wildlife value, pecan trees also have some medicinal benefits. The bark of the tree has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including diarrhea and dysentery.

Plant Pollination:
Pecan trees are monoecious, meaning that they have both male and female flowers on the same tree. However, they are self-infertile, so they need to be cross-pollinated by another pecan tree in order to produce nuts. The best way to ensure that your pecan tree produces nuts is to plant two or more trees of different varieties. See our Pollination page for more information on cross-pollination varieties and requirements!
