Bush’s Poppy Mallow (Callirhoe bushii)
Also known as: Bush's Winecup, Bush's Callirhoe
Bush’s Poppy Mallow is a rare and showy native perennial known for its vibrant magenta-purple flowers that resemble miniature hibiscus. A member of the mallow family, this deep-rooted plant thrives in dry, sunny conditions and is native to the tallgrass prairies and open glades of the central U.S. Its sprawling form, long bloom season, and resilience in tough soils make it an excellent choice for native gardens, pollinator meadows, and xeriscapes.
Key Characteristics
-
Long Blooming, Pollinator-Friendly Flowers
Blooming from May through August, Bush’s Poppy Mallow produces cup-shaped, magenta flowers with white centers that open each morning and close at night. These blooms attract a variety of pollinators, including native bees, small butterflies, and beetles. Its long flowering season makes it valuable in extending nectar availability. -
Rare Native for Prairie and Meadow Restoration
Endemic to parts of Missouri, Arkansas, and Kansas, Callirhoe bushii is considered uncommon in the wild and is a great choice for conservation-minded gardeners. It thrives in dry prairies, limestone glades, and open savannas, helping to restore native plant diversity in degraded areas. -
Adapted to Drought and Poor Soils
This species is highly drought-tolerant, with a deep taproot that allows it to survive in sandy, rocky, or shallow soils. Once established, it requires little maintenance, making it an excellent low-input plant for sunny slopes, dry borders, and wildflower plantings. -
Sprawling Habit Ideal for Groundcover or Edging
Bush’s Poppy Mallow grows in a low, spreading form, typically reaching about 12–18 inches tall and spreading several feet wide. This makes it ideal as a flowering groundcover, meadow edge plant, or native lawn alternative in sunny areas.
