Why Garlic Needs Seasonal Fertilization

Garlic grows over two distinct seasons, and its nutrient needs change dramatically from one phase to the next:

In Fall: Garlic needs nutrients to establish strong roots and resilient leaf growth before winter dormancy. It’s all about setting up the foundation. A fertilizer rich in slow-release nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, and soil biology stimulants gives garlic the strength to overwinter successfully and burst into growth in spring.

In Spring: Garlic shifts its energy into bulb production. To fuel that shift, it needs more phosphorus and potassium, along with sulfur to enhance flavor and disease resistance. Too much nitrogen in spring can lead to lush greens and undersized bulbs. The spring mix is specially formulated to avoid this, instead supporting dense, healthy bulbs with long storage life.

🌼 Spring Fertilizer Blend – “Bulbing Blend” (~0.5 lb)

Supports rapid bulb swelling and plant resilience during garlic’s peak growing phase.

• Fish meal – gentle nitrogen source to maintain foliage
• Bone meal – sustained phosphorus for bulb development
• Sulfate of potash – potassium for size, firmness, and flavor

• Epsom salts – adds magnesium for photosynthesis and sulfur for flavor compounds
