American Hazelnut (Corylus americana)

American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) is a large, deciduous shrub native to eastern North America. It is a valuable addition to any garden or landscape, providing both beauty and utility as an easy to grow staple crop. American Hazelnut is a good silvopasture and food forest understory crop (tolerant of shade) that is tolerant of black walnut juglones and clay soils. It naturally occurs in dry or moist thickets, woodlands and wood margins, valleys, uplands and prairies.

The nuts are edible and nutricious - a good source of protein and healthy fat! They were extensively used by Native Americans for food and medicine. The shrub is also a host plant for several species of butterflies and moths, and its foliage provides cover for a variety of wildlife. The wood is also valuable and useful in many application.

Native Range: Eastern North America, from southern Canada to the Gulf Coast states
Sun Requirements: Full sun to partial shade
Soil Moisture: Prefers well-drained soil, but will tolerate a range of soil conditions
Mature Height: 10-15 feet
Mature Width: 8-12 feet
Bloom Time: March-April
Bloom Color: Pale yellow

Pollination:
American Hazelnut is a monoecious plant, meaning that it has both male and female flowers on the same plant. However, it is still necessary to have at least two plants of different varieties to ensure pollination. See our Pollination page for more information on cross-pollination varieties and requirements!
