Medium Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)
Medium Red Clover is a short-lived perennial legume valued for its nitrogen-fixing ability, soil-building properties, and a long history of medicinal use. With its rose-pink to purple flower heads and rapid regrowth, it's widely used in cover cropping systems, silvopasture, and pollinator meadows. Unlike Mammoth Red Clover, which blooms once, Medium Red Clover produces multiple flushes of flowers through the growing season, making it more productive for forage and ecological services.
Medicinally, the blossoms have been traditionally used for their expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and lymphatic properties. Often prepared as a tea, tincture, or infused oil, Red Clover is a gentle yet powerful ally for skin health, hormonal balance, and respiratory support.
Key Characteristics
-
Nitrogen Fixer and Soil Builder
Red Clover enriches the soil by fixing atmospheric nitrogen, supporting future crops and building fertility over time. Its deep taproot also improves soil structure and reduces compaction. -
Medicinal Uses of the Blossoms
The dried flower heads are traditionally used for skin conditions, detoxification, respiratory issues, and menopausal symptoms. Common preparations include teas, tinctures, and infused oils. -
Extended Bloom for Pollinators
Medium Red Clover blooms repeatedly throughout the season, offering a steady nectar source for native bees, bumblebees, honeybees, and other beneficial insects. -
Valuable Forage and Silvopasture Plant
Highly palatable to grazing animals like cattle, sheep, and goats, Red Clover is excellent in rotational grazing systems, offering high-protein forage and improving pasture quality. -
Great for Cover Cropping and Meadow Mixes
Fast to establish and competitive against weeds, it integrates well into orchard understories, fruit tree guilds, and perennial polycultures as a living mulch or seasonal cover crop.
