White Walnut (Butternut) (Juglans cinerea)
The White (Butternut) Walnut tree, Juglans cinerea, is a large, deciduous tree valued for its edible nuts, beautiful timber, and wildlife habitat value. It is native to the eastern United States and Canada, and is fast growing in moist, rich soils along streams and in forests. Butternut trees are known for their attractive, light brown bark with deep furrows, and their long, compound leaves that turn a brilliant golden yellow in fall. The White Walnut is a rich North American heritage tree with declining and endangered wild populations.
Butternut nuts are prized for their buttery flavor and can be eaten fresh, roasted, or used in baking. The wood of butternut trees is also highly valued for its fine grain and warm color, making it a popular choice for furniture, cabinetry, and other woodworking projects. In addition to their economic value, butternut trees provide important habitat for a variety of wildlife, including squirrels, raccoons, and songbirds.
